I recently met a black guy who was a lacrosse coach at a local high school, and I asked him about it. He grew up in a mostly white community, and he acknowledged that when he takes his team to lacrosse matches, he’s generally the only African-American adult there, male or female, who isn’t related to one of his players (he’s worked to get more black teenagers at his school involved.) So if he meets a woman at a lacrosse match, she’s more likely to be white, and so if he’s looking for someone who shares his love of lacrosse (something they have in common), she’s probably going to be white. (He was interested in me, but as a farm girl from the Midwest, we did not have lacrosse in common.)

You can also have a lot in common with someone whose parents are going to reject you — that happens all the time for all kinds of reasons, and spawns all kinds of movies and books.
